For loose curls and coils

Ask whether the practitioner cleanses and detangles in sections, uses conditioner with fingers or a wide-tooth tool, offers diffusing or low-heat drying, and charges separately for detangling, length, density or drying.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that curly and tightly coiled hair can be more vulnerable to dryness and breakage and recommends gentle, wet detangling with conditioner.

For braids, twists and locs

Confirm whether the service is designed for the style to remain in place. Access to the scalp may be limited, and wetting can affect the style and add substantial drying time.

Massage should not pull on the hairline, tighten a style or pry between attachments. For locs, ask about product residue, rinsing and complete drying. “Loc-friendly” is useful only when the provider can explain its process.

For extensions, wigs and processed hair

Ask whether water, oil, steam or massage could affect the attachment method and follow the installer’s or manufacturer’s instructions. A dry service can still tug, shift or add product near attachment points.

Tell the provider what chemical or color service was performed and when. Ask whether the shampoo, exfoliant, steam and finishing heat are compatible.

Common questions

Do I need to detangle before the appointment?

Follow the provider’s instructions. Do not assume detangling is included, especially when the menu charges by time or density.

Can a head spa be done without removing braids?

Sometimes, but the service may reach only exposed scalp. Confirm water use, manipulation, products and drying before booking.

Will a wet head spa change my curl pattern?

Water and styling will temporarily change how curls are set or defined. Ask how the provider finishes textured hair and whether a blowout is optional.

What if a protective style already feels tight or painful?

Do not use massage to work through pain. Persistent discomfort, bumps, crusting or hairline changes deserve a break from tension and appropriate clinical advice.
